What is Centerless Grinding Machine

A Centerless grinding Machine is used for precision grinding of Cylindrical workpiece without the use of centers, chucks or fixtures to support the workpiece. Instead, the workpiece is floats freely between two rotating grinding wheels, the grinding wheel and the regulating wheel.

The key principle: The workpiece is not fixed, thus allows for continuous feeding of work piece.

Key Components and its Working of Centerless Grinder Machine

    1. Grinding Wheel – This is the larger wheel does the actual grinding and Cutting It is made of Abrasive Material & rotates at a higher speed.
    2. Regulating Wheel – This smaller wheel is usually made of a rubber-bonded abrasive material. It rotates in the same direction as of Grinding Wheel but at slower speed, controls the rotational speed and axial movement of the workpiece (rotates at lower speed, applies lateral pressure to push the workpiece forward).
    3. Work Rest Blade – It supports the workpiece from underneath, which is positioned between the grinding wheel and the regulating wheel.

Other Major parts of a Centerless Grinding Machine and their uses :

  • Machine Bed: A rigid, heavy base that supports all other components and dampens vibrations.
  • Grinding Wheel Head: Houses the grinding wheel spindle and the grinding wheel itself.
  • Regulating Wheel Head: Houses the regulating wheel spindle and the regulating wheel. This head is often adjustable (swivel and slide) to control the feed rate and accommodate different workpiece diameters.
  • Work Rest Blade: A hardened blade that supports the workpiece at the correct height and angle between the wheels. Its design and material are critical for achieving good results.
  • Wheel Dressers: Mechanisms (often diamond-tipped) used to true and dress the grinding and regulating wheels, ensuring they maintain the correct profile and cutting ability.
  • Slides (Upper and Lower): Allow for precise adjustment of the gap between the wheels and the position of the work rest blade to accommodate different part sizes and grinding depths.
  • Coolant System: Supplies coolant to the grinding zone to dissipate heat, flush away swarf (removed material), and improve surface finish.

Types of Centerless Grinding Operations:

There are three main types of Centerless grinding Machine:

  1. Through-Feed Grinding:
    • The workpiece is passes completely through the grinding zone between the wheels.
    • The regulating wheel is slightly angled to provide the axial force for feeding.
    • Ideal for grinding long Straight plain cylindrical parts like Pins, Shaft, rods, and tubes. It’s a very efficient method for high-volume production.
  2. In-Feed (Plunge) Grinding:
    • The workpiece is inserted and held in placed on the work rest blade, and the regulating wheel (or sometimes the grinding wheel head) is moved inward to “plunge” the workpiece against the grinding wheel.
    • Used for work pieces with shoulders, Grooves, multiple diameters, tapers, or complex shapes that cannot be through-fed.
  3. End-Feed Grinding:
    • The workpiece is fed axially into the grinding zone. End Feed Grinders are used when the workpiece is fed from one end and stops at the other (for tapered parts).
    • Used for grinding tapered parts.
Applications of Centerless Grinding Machines:
  • Automotive: Engine valves, pistons, piston pins, camshafts, crankshafts, transmission shafts, injector needles, bearings.
